expanding opportunity
Our North Star Goal is to expand our resources to Accelerate, Scale, and Sustain the work of our community partners to create healthy neighborhoods of opportunity and move 100,000 low-income Pittsburghers up the socio-economic ladder, over the next 10 years.
To ensure that community ownership and economic opportunity are the core of our work, our on-the-ground initiatives center around bringing the technical, human and financial resources together to co-power residents to revitalize and co-design and own their future. Here is a glimpse at progress made in 2020.
Healthy Neighborhood Framework
All Pittsburgh residents should have equitable opportunities to thrive, while living in healthy, opportunity-rich, and safe neighborhoods of choice. To ensure the realization of this principle, we created a unifying framework for our ground-level work in neighborhoods, adapting our strategy from a respected source: the Healthy Neighborhood Approach (developed by national neighborhood strategist David Boehlke).
Programs + Initiatives
Our programs connect people to the resources they need to create positive change in their neighborhoods. By deeply collaborating with community organizations on the ground, dedicated residents, and other amazing partners, we empower communities to be an active part of their own development, ensuring that the process is equitable and inclusive for all. Ultimately, we aim to support and encourage our partners’ best work by bringing hope, fresh ideas, expertise and resources to the table.

Capacity Building
We define community revitalization as the improvement of both a geographic place and its people. Without placing people at the foundation of our work, we risk applying brick-and-mortar, technical solutions to complicated, long-term social problems. By building community capacity, we empower residents to move upward with the economic development of their community.
Healthy Neighborhoods Celebration
Each year, using our Healthy Neighborhoods Framework as inspiration, the Healthy Neighborhoods Celebration & Award Ceremony honors and celebrates examples of exemplary work in Pittsburgh neighborhoods. In the face of the challenges 2020 presented, many organizations and community members stepped up to answer the needs of their community or continued their crucial work to create healthy neighborhoods across the region.
